When I began imagining Esperienza in 2017, I consulted a friend of mine who was an expert on small business development. He thought the non-profit would have no future because only people like me want to go to rural Italy. And in his opinion, there were very few of us…
Seven years later, there is small but growing community of curious, caring, compassionate people who are embracing a new way of traveling. Not only do they want to stay in touch and come back to Romagna, they are inspired to make a difference in their own lives and the lives of others.
I think of Linda who now teaches pasta classes in her communities and generously shares the bounty of her garden and table with others. She chooses the best ingredients, makes everything from scratch and dreams of one day becoming an intern for Gianluca Gorini.
I admire Lyndel, who gave so generously and beautifully in support of the Esperienza artist-in residence. And Fiorenza Pancino, the artist herself, who fell in love with Minneapolis this summer and now, welcomes Minneapolitans to her studio.
I am encouraged by Julia, who wants to help preserve everything Esperienza stands for, and by little Dario, who drew portraits of all the travelers…and recently received a present from her, water colors.
I resonate with Julie and Michael’s joy of being part of Esperienza and their readiness to volunteer any time for Isabella Dalla Ragione’s fruit orchard. And to challenge the world in the process.
Among you reading this letter there are so many others who every day inspire me to be more thoughtful, generous, knowledgeable and kind. For all of these I am deeply grateful for the kind of people Esperienza attracts. Wouldn’t you want to travel with them?
